Carcassonne is the capital of the Aude department in the Languedoc region of Occitanie in southern France. During the Roman period, the foundation of the city's urban functions was formed by fortifications, and in the Middle Ages, another layer of fortifications was built further outward. With this double fortified hilltop citadel, Cité, as its core, and the lower town that developed across the river Eudes, the two-tiered area was combined to develop the oldest fortified city in Europe. The citadel covering the Cité was restored in the 19th century by architect Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc, and the Cité was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 under the name "Historic Fortified City of Carcassonne. Carcassonne is also said to be the model for the setting of the anime "March of the Giants. The landscape of Carcassonne, a fortified city surrounded by two solid walls, is reminiscent of Wall Maria and Wall Rose in "The Clash of the Titans," and there are rumors that Carcassonne may be the model stage for the anime.
